German sociologist Georg Simmel (1858–1918) believed that conflict can help integrate and stabilize a society. He said that the intensity of the conflict varies depending on the emotional involvement of the parties, the degree of solidarity within the opposing groups, and the clarity and limited nature of the goals. In 1904 The American Journal of Sociology published a translation of Simmel’s renowned “The Sociology of Conflict.” in which he argues that conflict is a positive force that strengthens social relationships. Simmel compared the idea of conflict with a disease that when cured leaves leaves the body stronger than it was before its onset. conflict, forms of social interaction, Georg Simmel, new york city, sociology, stress, urban life A quiet span of days with a national holiday mid-week, rare access to expansive living spaces, no subway riding. He lectured at Berlin University for many years but was never given a permanent position because of his Jewish origins, his nonprofessorial brilliance, and what some took to be his destructive intellectual attitude.
